Printing a document just to sign it and scan it back in is one of the more absurd rituals of modern office life — and it's completely unnecessary. You can sign a PDF online, for free, in under two minutes, without installing any software. Here's exactly how.
Step 1: Create your signature
Before you can add a signature to a PDF, you need a digital image of your signature — a transparent PNG works best because it will sit cleanly on top of the document without a white background box around it.
Head to our free signature generator and either:
- Type your name and choose from over 100 realistic handwriting-style fonts, or
- Draw your signature directly with your mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen using the drawing tool.
Once you're happy with it, click Download PNG and choose the transparent background option. That's your signature file, ready to use anywhere — not just for PDFs, but for emails, forms, and documents in general.
Step 2: Open your PDF in a free PDF editor
You don't need Adobe Acrobat or any paid tool. Several free, browser-based options let you upload a PDF and place an image on it:

Step 3: Place, resize, and save
Once your PDF is open in your chosen tool:
- Upload your transparent-background signature PNG (from Step 1)
- Drag it onto the signature line or wherever it needs to go
- Resize it proportionally so it looks natural — not stretched or oversized
- Add the date next to it if the document requires one
- Save or export the completed PDF
